If you’re towing a caravan or driving a campervan you may well find that your typical in-car sat nav doesn’t quite route you appropriately all the time. Depending on your vehicle it’s pretty likely that you’ll need to avoid narrow roads and low bridges, which wouldn’t normally be an issue for car drivers. Not to mention the fact that you may well have requirements for a larger screen, and extras such as input for a rear parking camera.
The Garmin Camper 770LMT-D has been out there a while, but is still the latest model. The Camper models have all the style that you usually find with Garmin, with some great extras such as the photoreal junction view, and lane assist which shows actual road signs and landscape detail. The model name has a ‘D’ after it, indicating that it has Digital Traffic, a free lifetime highly detailed and accurate traffic update system.
The Return of the TomTom Camper!
A few years ago, TomTom had a model called the ‘TomTom Camper & Caravan’, which was based on the architecture of the TomTom Go 1000 at the time. The model got great reviews and appeared to be very popular, but for whatever reason, it was discontinued by TomTom and became rather hard to find.
However, we’re delighted to hear that TomTom have now released a brand new Camper model for 2018, simply called the ‘TomTom GO Camper’.
The TomTom GO Camper obviously includes Lifetime Camper and Caravan World maps – which help make sure that drivers are driving on the right road suited for vehicle type, size, weight and speed. It comes with a multi-touch 6 inch screen, which is plenty big enough to clearly see map detail and lane guidance views. It also includes exclusive camper-specific POIs from partners such as ADAC and ANWB which ensures that drivers can find camper spots and camping sites along the way. Plan your holiday in advance with a new feature called ‘TomTom Road Trips’, where you can personalise your adventure by up mountains, along coastal roads, into forests and beyond. As with all the latest TomTom GO devices, you get advance warnings whenever you’re approaching a fixed, mobile or average speed camera, and it will remind you of the speed limit.
Aguri Motorhome & Caravan AV720
Whilst most people go for the popular UK brands of TomTom or Garmin, also give a thought to the well respected Aguri brand. Aguri have been around for years and the latest models include all the features you find on other brands including lifetime map updates and digital traffic. The Aguri AV720 is the only camping sat nav we’re aware of that has a super-large 7″ screen, and probably has the loudest speaker we’ve ever heard!
Q: What’s different about a normal in-car sat nav and a sat nav suitable for towing a caravan?
A: The sat navs specific for caravan towers allow you to enter vehicle height, weight and width restrictions, and calculate the route accordingly. They also offer campsite points of interest, and often have large screens and external camera support.
Q: What’s different between a sat nav for a caravan tower, and a sat nav suitable for a truck?
A: This mainly comes down to software. The points of interest will be based on truck stops etc, rather than campsites.
Q: Which is best – TomTom, Garmin, or Aguri?
A: There’s not a lot to choose between brands these days, all offer very similar functionality and hardware. We’d base your decision purely on price and requirements, e.g. your screen size preference.
